Buying a second bike.

Alright. So background. I started on a 96 Yamaha xt225.
Then an 84 Honda night hawks / cb700sc then one day I found myself riding away from Everett powersports with my 2005 Yamaha Fz1. Now, I love this bike. Its perfect for me. Its comfortable. Fast but not stupid fast and handles well for a "sport touring bike" but I can stand the 30-40 mpg for city driving. So my question is this, what would be a bike that would get better mileage but I would feel like I was hopping on a gutless 250. Cbr500 may be? I do kind of want an enduro again, husky 701?

The new Husky 701 has the double balance shafted KTM 690 motor, which is very smooth, makes 73Hp, and should get about 60mpg?

DR650 would be good enduro choice too. Great mileage with some grunt and tons of after market support. Price is pretty nice as well. Good luck with whatever you decide. :)

Ride a r3 or one of the other 300's. Gas mileage is high and they have a bit more power then a 250.

Service intervals on the husky's is atrocious in regards to using it as a commuter vehicle, but not bad if its a weekend/track day toy.

Guess I'm too used to a truck getting 10 mpg in the city. I'm happy with 35mpg commuting with my FZ1, lol.

The NC700X from Honda is claiming 73 mpg.

A "giant" newer scooter passed by me doing almost 80 on 101 last week while on a drive with my wife. im pretty sure he was maxed out.

off subject: last night on my route, a huge lifted chevy flew past me (i was doing 70) and i thought "oh cool, a blocker car". couple minutes later i see headlights flying towards me from way back and i thought he was coming up fa.....thats as far as i got as he blew by in heavy triple digits. completely unmarked impala with nonexempt plates had him pulled over 10 miles later. THANKS GUY IN CHEVY TRUCK!!

My Street Twin is in high 50s MPG. But if you want zero MPG, get Zero motorcycle and charge it from the outlet :)

That's suprsing. I often pass cops on the freeway doing 70 and never get messed with. But maybe it's just cuz they know if I wanted to run they wouldnt be able to catch me in a super car let alone their crown vic

I was doing 70 and the guy just walked past me like i was sitting there. he was easily doing at least 90 when he flew by.

I ride a BMW GS1200 that gets 40-45 mpg. And I put 20k a year on it.
A BMW S1000RR that gets 40ish, (ridden sanely) But one can't argue with 160mph down the front straight at The Ridge Motorsports Park.
A Ducati 749 that gets close to to 40mpg

Or I could drive a shitbox Toyota Prius that gets 40mpg

Seriously? YOLO! You're dead a lot longer than you're alive. Ride fast, take chances.

Street Triple gets about 40mpg with a healthy mix of highway and city riding. Mine gets 45mpg with a power commander. It would probably average 50mpg if the throttle would stop opening itself up so wide on onramps ;)

One way to go is look up a bike that interests you on fuelly.com. Almost at random at the moment I see a naked 2006 Suzuki SV650 with less than 6K miles that just popped up on on Portland craigslist (but a Vancouver bike) for $3500.

I was looking at SVs and VStroms around then and I noticed the nakeds were harder to find than the sport fairing version at the time. Poster claims 60mpg "if you ride easy", which suggests to me you'd want to check all his claims pretty carefully, as that doesn't seem to agree with anyone else's real world experience. Also the price seems a little low for the mileage, though the SV was just a bit dated for its class even then.

On the other hand nearly 50 overall seems fairly common and is good for a proven and bulletproof bike like the Suzuki. I ended up getting a VStrom back then (07); same engine but of course a somewhat different build and I don't quite remember the mileage. 47 sounds about right. (Great bike and I kind of miss it even it it wasn't a perfect fit for my demands.)

Those are just averages over a few hundred owners. while one guy might be constantly flying around wherever they go and getting closer to 35mpg, another might be shifting earlier to keep the rpms down and/or not launching off the line, obviously getting better mpg. i have gotten around 60+mpg on my 600 (not a vstrom but the principle still appies) if i kept off the throttle for the WHOLE TANK of gas, to see how far i could stretch it.

i doubt most of the people in the surveys coddled their bikes on every trip. what rider hasnt opened it up more often than they really should (killing their mpg)? that would definitely lower the averages.

just because the average person is getting a lower mpg, it doesnt mean the bike isnt CAPABLE of getting more due to changing their riding style.
