Vintage Honda MX 4 Stroke Build

At the last AHRMA Vintage MX national, my 1972 TM 250 lost spark during practice.

My friend has his 1972 Honda XL 250 - built for MX at the race. He said I could race it if I wanted. I quickly ran to sign up and they were quite helpful in changing classes and race number for me that day. Both AHRMA and the PNWVMX have a class for early sportsman stock 4 strokes (pre 1972). This class is helpful to Honda riders since Honda did not make a 2 stroke before 1973.

I had never ridden the bike, but I won both motos with a hole shot in the second moto.

It was so fun to ride, that I decided to build one. With that off to Allen's Cycle (who also have a salvage yard) to start the build. I found a frame, a set of front forks, a good condition XL 175 gas tank, a seat, black fenders that will work, a set of rims (including hubs) and spokes and an entire motor (I actually found 2 of those).

Attached are the pics of the build so for. I ground down the tabs for lights, sand blasted and painted the frame. Cleaned up the Forms and painted the fork tubes red. Cleaned up the rims (sand blasted the hubs) and used some acid to clean the spokes. The spokes, hubs, rims will be powder coated. The engine will be gone through in the next few weeks. Gas Tank will be cleaned and painted this weekend.

I'm interested in this build. My first "real" motorcycle from my childhood was a 73 XL350. Still own it. I was way to young and small to be on that bike, but times were different then. I have many fond memories of cruising dirt roads on the old thumper. I've often thought about resurrecting the old girl. Good luck!!

Are you going thru the engine yourself? Or are you sending it out to have it done?

I am going to have the guys at Allen's Cycle rebuild the motor for me.

I have ordered the Ohlin's rear shocks for it. They should be here this week.

I have ordered the Renthal bar system (GP Bend which is 2 inches taller than Stock), plus a 2 inch lift for a total of 4 inch taller bars.

I called AMS Racing out of Arizona. They are building me a down pipe for the bike ($300.00). It will take 3 weeks.

I have decided to make the bike look like an adult XR 75. Eat your heart out Jeff Ward.
