Dirty Face Dual Sport - June 18

Anyone else going to this on June 18th? I am with a few friends. It has been a few years since I have been to this event but if it's like the past ones it should be fun.

Info can be found here: http://www.lakewenatcheerecclub.com/...6.94135216.pdf

Yup that's you. That was fun. Remember Matt aka Vagrant was with us. I think that was one of my first times riding with you. Or rather should I say trying to keep up.

Lets get out for a ride soon.

Do they still use rollcharts? or have they joined the 21st century with GPS?

Someone I know has a funny story about making a wrong turn, getting lost and running out of gas at the Dirtyface many years ago..

I like using a GPS BUT, unless you have it hard wired, the battery life will take all the fun out.

One instance: three riders went out to verify mileage the day before the scheduled Dual sport ride. One guy got separated, took a wrong turn and had to go by GPS to find any way back to the camp. Batteries went dead, he stayed lost until way after dark, guys covered all the route, evee looking over the sides of the road for a wreck.

The lost guy showed up just before midnight. The "rescue teams" came in much later.

Roll charts add another challenge to the ride.

Letting your GPS battery die is as foolish as not carrying enough fuel. My GPS is plugged into the bike but I still carry extra batteries.
Roll charts present a few problems. If your odometer reads differently the turns wont be at the marked mileage and if you ever make a wrong turn and add miles to the odometer the rollchart could become worthless. That would make for an interesting challenge.

Agree about the power but some never consider the possibility.
if you take a wrong turn, you just have to back track, note the mileage and reset at the next reset point. riding with others helps.
using a roll chart adds another challenge to the game

Been too long! Things are good. Not riding as much as I want to. We need to grab a beverage. I want to watch you race but can't get the timing right...yet. Kick a** at your race

I think it is still roll charts and I don't seem to do very well with them. But lucky for me a guy I ride with has lots of knowledge of the area and is good at roll charts and we back a GPS with back up batteries. 😉 That's how I got the tracks in the picture.

Update on ride

Decent rider turnout but weather was horrible. It poured all day. Not just a little it poured! We even had sleet/snow at higher elevations. Heard about several riders who got hypothermia. Probably one of the many people in all MX gear. All some guys had on top was a jersey and chest protector. So because of the weather we didn't even come close to doing the entire 142 miles. Visibility was a problem. We stopped after about 40 miles and tore down camp in the down pour. Interesting that even though it was pouring the mosquitoes were out in force. Apparently the rain had washed off the deet. Then we loaded up for the ride home soaking wet and tired. It felt like we did the 142 miles.

Ok so that was a whole bunch of negatives. Here are some positives.

There was absolutely no dust!! Usually it is really bad.

Sliding around the corners was a blast!

I didn't have to clean my air filter afterwards.

Oh and I forgot my water bladder but as you would expect I didn't need it. All you had to do to get a drink was open your mouth.

My friend left his backpack at the start and it was there when we came back hours later. Good karma for all the honest riders!

So that's the update. You didn't miss anything fun Pete.
