Thumbs up Dirt Riding: Whatcom County ORV park?

There has been enough un-sanctioned riding on taxpayer owned "DNR" land that (due to public pressure and land pressure) they have finally decided to pursue an official riding area in Whatcom County! It is literally years away (2-3) from being official, but initial meetings with residents have been positve and hundreds have turned out to let their voices be heard. These meetings were a necessary step in getting a legal off-road area to ride in and getting input from potential users.

At this stage there have been two local initial meetings and the next step is where it is going to a committee to steer the project as it starts the process towards the goal of an ORV park.
This is the best news to come out of the dirt community up here since Reagan was president. (That was the only time where we had funding and everything in place to make an ORV park happen... and then it didn't).

There are numerous steps to getting this passed and implemented but we will need all of your input when the time comes in order to push this through!

This is good news! I hope everyone can come together and make this happen. Hopefully they don't use Reiter as the example though... Something like Tahuya or Walker would be great.

Neither Rieter or Tahuya is an ORV park.

Straddleline and Riverside are to only two in Washington State.

Hopefully that sort of closed course style facility is not what people actually want.

Allowing ORV use on DNR managed public land, using a model similar to Tahuya is something that I would strongly support.

Orv park

Ok, so a little more info.
They are putting forth the model of Walker Valley. So, that's a good thing. There were input sessions available and someone mentioned NO CONCRETE PAVERS!!

I also emphasised this point as well as to use smaller rock on the top surface. The blasted, sharp-edge baseball rocks are nasty on the front tires and are not fun to ride.

Unfortunately, there are NO motorcycle riders in the DNR (in my unofficial survey) so they are unaware of things affecting us. The good news is there are ATV users in DNR so at least they should understand issues related to ATV's and trails for them.

Jesse Simms (Tahuya) is a mt biker and I'm pretty sure that he rides dirt bikes or at least used to, but that is about it as far as I know.

That is why things like the Walker Valley advisory committee are so important.

As long as he or she is willing to listen to experts, the land manager does not have to be a rider to do a good job.
