Dead horse

I'm new to PNW and I'm sure this topic is beat to death, but I'm wonder what riding jacket would be best for around here. I'm looking for something water proof that I won't die in durning the summer. The Joe Rocket atomic 5.0 seems appealing, just looking for some input.

Cheers

I rolled with a JR atomic 4.0 for many years in the PNW, it was a really good bang for the buck, a real 3 season coat. I moved on to MotoPort gear and am very happy, still ride year round and snowmobile in it, but more spendy.

There are many options to choose from but my recommendation would be to go with leather. It's not necessary to go full cartoon super hero. There are plenty of subtle choices. Leather is the only type of gear approved for pro competition if I recall correctly and that should mean something.

I have been very happy with my Klim stuff, both on and off the track, in rain, and summer. Hard around here to only have one jacket for year 'round though...

  Here

A mesh jacket with a removable waterproof liner and separate thermal liner pretty much gives you all the options for year-round riding. And unlike jackets I've had with closeable vents which at best only keep you cool at 25+mph, mesh jackets keep you from poaching in stop-start summer riding.

I have a few choices in the closet but my grab-n-go jacket without checking the weather is a four or five year old partial mesh Olympia Airglide 3. Genuinely comfortable year round. The liner is designed to be worn as a jacket as well.

I have a winter jacket, with liner, and a summer jacket, with liner. Between the two, there is not weather I can't tackle.

I just picked up one of these Pilot mesh jackets with a zip-in waterproof liner. Only had it a couple days but it is nice and comfortable and I'm really happy with it. Elbow, shoulder and back armor in it as well.

This is the Pacific NorthWet where waterproof is really water resistant as it's just a matter of xx minutes before your feeling the rain soaking though.

Best bet is to get a jacket you like that has a quilted liner and then carry something that goes over your gear when it gets wet out. FrogToggs are popular, but other options are available for less money.

What he said. Waterproof liners are common, but your jacket gets soaked through. Who wants a heavy wet jacket? Rainproof oversuit is much better. Not only that, but many jackets are a bit leaky to the wind; usually a good thing in warmer weather. A waterproof oversuit will be windproof, too, good for colder weather.

I have an Aerostich Darien suit. Kinda hot in central Oregon in the summer, but I keep moving and it's not too bad. Goretex lining keeps me dry in the rain.

I use a Toumaster transition, it has a removable vest for winter, which I usually leave out in favor of a heated vest. For the summer its pretty well vented. Its not the best as far as construction goes, and you will need a better back protector, but overall I think its a very good value.

For waterproofing I use 303 Fabric Guard. This stuff will bead water on a soft top in Oregon rain like a well waxed car.

So... i have a firstgear kenya jacket, aerostich darien pants, alpinestar goretex and tcx goretex boots, and klim element gloves.
I've ridden through many many hours of rain, including some whit I had to pull over for because I couldn't see... and I stay dry.
When the firstgear finally starts to fail me, I'll switch to an aerostich jacket or just get a
roadcrafter.
