Let's buy Chelan Search and Rescue a winch

Two weeks ago I found myself in need of help from Chelan County Search and Rescue while riding part of the WA BDR above Lake Chelan. The Deputy that responded only had hand tools (a come-along and some tow straps) to pull my bike back up to the road, and I think that sucks. He helps several of us out every season, so let's give him a hand and buy the man a winch.

I carry this so I can extract myself on my own in a situation like yours. I have additional rope and this small unit can lift 1000 pounds.

EZ Marine Belt Pack Hoist 3

Sound Rider also has something similar but at 3 times the cost.

That's pretty cool. Fortunately my wife OK'd purchasing one of these for next season: Warn Industries XT17 Portable Motorcycle ATV Winch

Unfortunately I'm a broke college student at the moment, so that's a long ways out. Right now I just want to give back to the Deputy that helped me out, so I'm throwing all of my money and time at this.

May never get up there myself, but seems like a good cause to me.

On top of the winch, does the truck have a way to mount it? I know my truck required a new bumper or at least some kind of mounting bracket to fit it on. Or is that gonna be covered by them?

Thank you!

I'm not sure on the mounting hardware. He says he talked to his mechanics to determine what was needed and only gave me a list of winches. I assume either they have some hardware on hand or will cover the cost of the mounting bracket.

There are a few ways to build a winch with some good rope and know how,

Maybe Warn will help on the expense. It'd be worth talking with them in Oregon...

I wonder if non-enforcement public safety departments like Search and Rescue get the same kind of donations of surplus military gear the way enforcement departments do? I suspect not, in part because it seems unlikely that the military is constantly upgrading non-weapons equipment to anything like the same degree.

Bad timing for me financially. I might be able to chip in in a couple weeks after I've moved and started the new job.

Good idea! I'll be doing that.

Not sure, but this guy's a Sheriff's Deputy. Definitely in the enforcement category, but maybe his non-enforcement responsibilities fall into the wrong category for that.

No worries. I'm in the same spot, having just paid tuition.

Just a thought.

Up to $525! $240 more and we're able to buy the least expensive model. At that point it's just up to the deputy if we push for the full $1400. Thanks again to everyone who has donated, I really appreciate it.

I just wanted to post a quick follow-up. Two weeks ago we hit one of the target amounts and were able to supply the Chelan County Sheriff's Dept. Search and Rescue Coordinator with a brand new winch!

I wanted to take a second and thank everyone who donated. It means a tremendous amount to me, and likely even more to him. In theory there's a picture of the winch attached to his patrol truck coming at some point, but for now the order with "Delivered" printed on it will have to suffice. Thanks again!
